Going natural for some, means "Letting GO" and "Not giving a DAMN" -Nappy is Happy-. And for others, like myself, it means a fresh way of living and a new perspective on life (Patients is a virtue). I'm two years in, and during my prime, it was a blistering pain in my ass. This sweltering obsession is only in regards to my HAIR. I grew up rocking a relaxer (Elementary School - High School... and so on), and going cold turkey was not easy on my part. In the beginning of this maniacal adventure, I endured an immense amount of breakage. The hair on my head that was in relaxed mode, went in to utter shock and could not handle the full, lustrous new growth that was seeping through my follicles. As time progressed, my relaxed ends literally snapped off. In due time, parting ways was bound to happen, however, I would of preferred a professional to have aided in this process (periodically, go to a salon and get your hair trimmed). ANY WHO, what's done is done and now I'm so thrilled to grip on to my new, luxurious, FULL head of healthy hair. It has been over two years and my hair is thick, soft and growing at a rapid speed. Going natural is not for everyone and if not forewarned, anxiety may become a frequent suitor. However, I'm pleased with the outcome and would encourage anyone who is seeking a fresh mane, to consider going natural. ~CheyNaRey

For All Hair Types
"The [raw] egg is really the best of all worlds," says Janice Cox, author
of Natural Beauty at Home. The yolk, rich in fats and proteins,
is naturally moisturizing, while the white, which contains
bacteria-eating enzymes, removes unwanted oils, she explains.
To Use: For normal hair, use the entire egg to condition hair;
use egg whites only to treat oily hair; use egg yolks only to moisturize
dry, brittle hair, Cox says. Use 1/2 cup of whichever egg mixture is
appropriate for you and apply to clean, damp hair. If there isn’t enough
egg to coat scalp and hair, use more as needed. Leave on for 20
minutes, rinse with cool water (to prevent egg from “cooking”) and
shampoo hair. Whole egg and yolks-only treatments can be applied once a
month; whites-only treatment can be applied every two weeks.
For Dull Hair
Styling products (as well as air pollution) can leave a film that both
saps moisture and dulls shine—but dairy products like sour cream and
plain yogurt can help reverse this damage. "Lactic acid gently strips
away dirt while the milk fat moisturizes," says Lisa Belkin,
author of The Cosmetics Cookbook.
To Use: Massage 1/2 cup sour cream or plain yogurt into damp hair
and let sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water, followed by cool
water, then shampoo hair as you normally would. Treatment can be applied
every other week.
Recognized by the FDA as a natural
and effective skin protector against itching and irritation, oatmeal also makes
a gentle mechanical exfoliating facial scrub. Grind the oatmeal in a blender or
coffee grinder and mix with water to form a paste. Gently massage onto your wet
face and then rinse with warm water. Blend the oatmeal with lemon juice or
honey instead of water to strengthen oatmeal's exfoliating properties.
Sugar
Alpha hydroxy acid is a common
chemical exfoliating ingredient in expensive facial products. Sugar contains
glycolic acid, a type of alpha hydroxy acid that removes dead cells from the
surface of your skin. Make your own economical beauty treatment by gently
scrubbing a teaspoon of white or brown sugar, or a spoonful of honey, onto your
wet face. Rinsing with warm water.
Avocado
Avocado offers plant-based, healthy
fats that moisturize dry skin when applied topically. To provide a natural
barrier against facial moisture loss, apply mashed avocado to your wet skin,
massage gently, and then rinse with warm water. Exercise caution if your skin
tends to break out, as the oils in avocado can clog pores.
Olive
Oil
Olive oil is another natural
moisturizer effective in combating dry skin. Apply directly to your dampened
face, or mix olive oil with sugar to create a moisturizing and gentle
exfoliating scrub. Avoid areas on your face that are prone to breaking out
because olive oil, like avocado, can clog the pores on your face.
Egg
White
Egg white is composed of almost pure
protein and is effective as a facial toner. To tighten skin and reduce pore
size on your face, beat an egg white until it just starts to froth, and then
apply liberally to your face, avoiding your eyes. Leave the egg white on your
face until it is completely dry to the touch, and then rinse with warm water.
Witch
Hazel
Witch hazel, the extract from the
leaves and bark of the Hamamelis tree, is a safe and effective over-the-counter
astringent, according to the FDA. Dampen a cotton ball with witch hazel and
apply firmly to your face, avoiding your eyes, to tighten pores and temporarily
tone the skin of your face.
